Why Choose A Mini-Split System?

A ductless mini-split is a form of heat pump system with separate internal units for different rooms, each attached to the central outdoor unit via refrigerant lines instead of ducts. If you’re unfamiliar with heat pumps, think of them as similar to an air conditioner, where by heating and cooling refrigerant with fans and compressors, you can move heat around. In an AC, this is used to produce cool air inside which is pushed through ducts, but in a ductless mini-split this can be used like a normal air conditioner (with separate internal units pushing cold air) or reversed to move heat into your home in the winter. This lets you control each room on an individual basis, for personalized comfort.

I had the pleasure of working with Allen with Gens-Ryan when he came to look at the issue in my air duct, and I couldn’t be more impressed. He was prompt, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable.
Allen did a great job diagnosing our extreme condensation on the air duct issue. Clearly explained and demonstrated the problem. Took the time to answer all my questions and was helpful in talking through options. I have seen many a service technician come in, take care of the "basic" and out in no time. This is not how Allen works. Not only is he meticulous about how he does his inspections, using every piece of equipment in his arsenal, he took the time to explain to me what he was doing, why he was doing it. I highly recommend Gens-Ryan Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, & Electrical

UPDATE:
7/21/2025 Visit - Continued work with GR, this time for a free electrical consultation. I worked with a tech. named Joe W. He was more than happy to do the full home inspection while I shadowed him, asking questions along the way to which he answered the ones he knew and didn't try to answer ones he didn't know, general housing questions, not electrical. We related through shared pop culture interests and had good conversation as going through the proper electrical checks. When the inspection was done, he ran through the items noted on his inspection, have an estimated work order cost and answered my questions again regarding the work. When the estimate came through, there was no surprise as this was the amount we discussed. Joe W. was easy to work with, knowledgeable and professional. I would highly recommend working with Joe W. and getting to know him better. Thanks Joe!

The new unit had been installed while I was out of town. I had a friend at the house to let the techs. in for the install. The install went well enough but the new furnace had not been delivered on the day of the install. A minor hiccup. This review is for the install of the Resideo monitoring device used to employ Genz-Ryan's HomePulse subscription service. I enrolled in this for the peace-of-mind selling point advertised and the value carried with the home if I desire to sell in the future. The technician that performed the install for the Resideo device was Anthony A. He allowed me to shadow him for the duration of the install and answered the many questions I had. There were network connectivity issues leading to this install taking around three hours. In this time we did chat quite a bit which led to me learning more about home HVAC systems and the harmony they can produce. I enjoyed the time with Anthony quite a bit and appreciated his knowledge and expertise. He also informed me he has a little one on the way, scheduled for delivery in January. I hope the delivery goes smooth and wish him and his family well for future endeavors. I hope the sleepless nights aren't too taxing, Anthony! ✌️

I had to call Genz-Ryan to investigate a furnace issue. I did a fair amount of research before their arrival and tried to fix a few things myself but was in the weeds so had to call in professionals. I was sad to realize purchasing a new furnace would be the move since I had a cracked heat exchanger on a 19 year old furnace. I was presented the information on different levels of furnace efficiency (80% vs. 90%) and clearly understood the pros and cons of both lines of appliance. The techs. that performed this guided presentation and explanation were Mike H. and Evan. They acted with professionalism and communicated with clarity. I was at no point confused on what was happening and why. We also spoke with Shane L., one of the design techs. who summarized the options and a decision was made. These gentlemen were kind-hearted and transparent with their explanations. I wasn't in the best of mood to add another home expense to the ledger but these previously mentioned gentlemen were very easy to work with. I would be happy to work with them again!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get rid of hot and cold spots in your house?

First, ensure your vents are open and unobstructed in the areas where you notice temperature differences. If your vents are clear, consider other factors that may work against your HVAC system, like broken window and door seals, poor insulation, and dirty ductwork. Temperature zoning can also make a huge difference because it’ll allow you to have multiple thermostats to tailor temperature control to each area.

How do I know which type of heating system to pick?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to heating, so you’ll want to choose based on your budget, preferences, and goals. Heat pumps and ductless mini-splits can be expected to cost significantly more than furnaces at similar sizes on the front end, for example, but generally require less maintenance, last longer, offer better efficiency, and provide a gentler and more comfortable heat. You might also want to consider your current heating system and what you’d need to do to implement a particular form of heat; if you don’t already have ductwork, a furnace is suddenly far less cost-effective upfront.

Do heat pumps and mini-splits work when it gets really cold?

A heat pump or ductless mini-split system will still work to heat your home as temperatures reach freezing, but they start to lose efficiency and need to work harder to provide the same level of heat. Below freezing, you’ll see efficiency the same as or worse than a furnace, and as the temperature lowers, the furnace will pull ahead substantially. Of course, a heat pump is as much as 3 to 4 times as efficient as a furnace during optimal temperatures, so it’s still a great investment for efficiency!

Can I rewire my own house?

Rewiring your home without falling out of code, to say nothing of the actual technical difficulties and safety concerns, can be extremely difficult without proper training. While it may not be technically impossible to do so, it’s easy to end up breaking the law, harming yourself, or damaging your property in the process. We recommend always leaving it to a certified electrician.

Can I use multiple heating systems together?

If it makes sense for your home, yes! Many homes have both a heat pump and furnace to maintain high efficiency no matter the weather, with reliable on-demand heat when you need to get the temperature up quickly.Heat pumps can pull double duty for cooling, so it’s not much different from the way a traditional air conditioner connects to your furnace’s air handler.
