Top 3 Causes of Having No Power in a Room or a Garage & How To Restore It

How to fix power outage? From storms to down power lines, a complete power outage is frustrating, but you can usually figure out the cause pretty quickly.

However, a partial power outage that leaves you with no electricity in a single room or garage may require more troubleshooting before you call an electrician.

Tripped GFCI Outlet

The GFCI outlet is a safety device to reduce the risk of electrocution. It’s especially common for them to trip in garages and bathrooms, although the outlet may be in a different room.

GFCI Outlet Example
Once you’ve found the right outlet, the receptacle is between the top and bottom socket and has two buttons that say “test” and “reset.”

Try clicking the “reset” button. If it was triggered, you’ll be able to press the button down completely. You’ll hear a click, and the power should turn back on.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

If a tripped GFCI receptacle isn’t the issue, consider one of the most common causes of partial power outages is a tripped circuit breaker. Most tripped breakers result from a circuit overload or a defective appliance. If this is the case, this can easily be resolved yourself by resetting the circuit breaker with these easy steps:

  1. Start by unplugging all appliances in the room.
  2. Locate your circuit breaker panel. These are often installed on the wall of your basement or garage.
  3. Open the panel and look for a switch facing in the opposite direction of all the others. If it’s unclear which switch is “off,” look carefully; it may be stuck in the halfway position.
  4. Flip the switch to restore your power. If it doesn’t move, you may need to push it all the way in the “off” position before flipping it back on.

Your power should be restored immediately. However, you may need an electrical panel upgrade if the circuit repeatedly trips.

Blown Fuse

Older homes with fuse boxes instead of electrical panels will have blown fuses instead of tripped circuit breakers.

Outdated fuse boxes often struggle to keep up with the electrical demands of our modern technology.

If your fuse box can no longer support your power needs, it’s time for an electrical panel upgrade.

When to Call an Electrician

If you have reset breakers and GFCI receptacles and still have a partial power outage, the issue may be loose or faulty wiring or an overloaded electrical panel. If that’s the case, it’s time to call an electrician for help.
