Why Is the Air So Dry in My Home in the Winter?

Posted On: January 12, 2018

Sitting by the fireplace is a cozy way to warm up this winter. But while you’re enjoying the warmth from the fire or the furnace cranked up, you’ll probably notice that your skin is cracked, your lips are chapped and your nose and throat are dry.

Why is the air so dry inside?

Dry air outside in the winter is inevitable, but most people wonder how the air in their house gets so dry during the cold months, too.

Cold air doesn’t hold very much moisture. During the winter months, cold air can seep into your home through windows, doors and areas that aren’t well-insulated, like attics and basements. The furnace and fireplace can heat the air, but they don’t add any humidity to it. So you’re left with warm, dry air inside your home, leading to dry, cracked skin and a dry nose and throat.

How do you fix it?

To combat the dry air, install a single-room or whole-home humidifier. Single-room humidifiers are relatively inexpensive and require minimal assembly. They’re great for bedrooms, especially for people with breathing problems. Whole-home humidifiers are installed with your home’s heating and cooling system.

Genz-Ryan offers whole-home humidifier products and installation in the Minneapolis – Saint Paul area. With our Aprilaire® humidifiers, you’ll be more comfortable in your home and breathe easier. You’ll also feel warmer when your house is set at a lower temperature because of the additional moisture in the air, so you’ll be saving energy, too. We offer automatic humidifiers, so there’s no need to worry about manually setting the humidity. You’ll stay comfortable all year long with a whole-home humidifier.

Stay warm without the annoying cracked skin and dry throat this winter. For more information on whole-home humidifiers and how you can eliminate that brutal dry air in your Minneapolis area home, contact Genz-Ryan or schedule your next service call online.
